Are you always feeling down and unhappy? Maybe you are going through depression. Maybe it’s time you pick up yourself and go out and do something different.

Have you ever been to a park where you saw Chinese people, mostly seniors, moving gracefully together in an almost serene way? Have you ever wondered what they were doing? Actually, they’re doing something called Tai Chi, from the Chinese people. It is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of mild gentle physical exercise that involves a lot of stretching. It is believed to help reduce stress and promote a person’s feeling of general well being.

Tai Chi involves movements and bodily postures that are performed very slowly in a graceful manner. It is done in such a manner that the actions flow from one position to another without much effort.

For Tai Chi practitioners, they describe the whole movement as meditation in motion because the whole program promotes peacefulness through calm movements, and while doing these movements, connecting the body and the mind into one cohesive whole.

Benefits of Tai Chi

According to Tai Chi experts, from the traditional Chinese medicine’s point of view, Tai Chi and Qi Gong are very effective in promoting personal energy for self healing, in developing the feeling of general wellbeing by reducing anxiety and depression, and by increasing energy, endurance and agility. The benefits are actually aplenty; and preliminary studies have shown that Tai Chi can actually be a very good activity for older people.

Can Anybody Do Tai Chi?

Yes! Most forms of Tai Chi are gentle and can be done by almost anyone, even the older people or the very young ones. Tai Chi gives emphasis to technique rather than strength, so it’s actually safe even for those with concerns on their physical abilities. Moreover, Tai Chi is really a low impact activity so it’s actually best suited for older adults who otherwise may not exercise for many reasons.

Advantages if Tai Chi Over Other Exercises

Tai Chi is not expensive because there’s no need for special equipments or uniforms. It can be done outdoors, in the lawn or in any open field. You can do it alone, or you can do it with a group.

However, just like any form of exercise, it will always be for your best interest to talk to your doctor first and tell him about your interest to, or desire to try Tai Chi. This is essential most especially if you have medical concerns with your heart, joints, or your spine. This is also true to pregnant women; see first your doctor for approval. If you have had problems before like old fractures, or if you have osteoporosis, better consult with your doctor before starting a Tai Chi program.
